As part of our Culture of Success Programme we’re going behind the scenes at Pocketworks HQ in our new Five Minutes with… features; celebrating our staff, what they do and what makes them unique.

Five minutes with… Matt

Hey, I’m Matej, but everyone calls me Matt. After two years in the Leeds office I’m now based in Slovakia as an Android and Web Developer.

I spend most of my time working on the software design and implementation of our Android and Web apps. One of the best things about Pocketworks is what a collaborative company it is, everyone can say their opinion and we spend a good amount of time working out projects together as a team.

A lot of coders like to focus on the development side of things but I actually really enjoy the people side of our business, and enjoy coming back to Yorkshire whenever I’m needed. Being involved in meetings, getting to know our clients, what they want and why they want it makes developing their apps so much easier and often leads to quicker, smarter solutions.

It’s not just at work I love tech, I spend my spare time programming or reading about programming and related subjects, I just really enjoy it. Seeing something you’ve created come to life is very satisfying. But don’t ask what app I’d love to build above all, I won’t become a millionaire if I tell you!

My favourite app, Spotify, actually isn’t one of the most technical, but it’s the one I use and enjoy the most. In contrast, my Pocketworks Star Wars avatar is Tie Fighter, it’s such a slick machine! So I guess I like things that deliver what you want, but that also function well.

If I could have any superpower I’d turn it down, it would make life too easy. It would be like cheating in a video game; fun for the first five minutes but then it gets boring.

Contrary to many, my five year aim doesn’t include climbing the management ladder. I love what I do: building software. Moving away from the hands on, creative side of that doesn’t appeal to me at all. I get the most satisfaction from creating things which are useful for other people, so I’d be happy if I can keep doing that, learning new and exciting methods and helping progress software development techniques.
